Guide to Determining IF Your Window Seal is Broken

Windows only properly do their job when they have a tight seal. The seal is what helps prevent the outside weather from seeping into your home. Unfortunately, window seal failure occurs frequently. Here are some signs that indicate that your window seal has broken.
  • Foggy windows: Don’t confuse this with normal condensation. The fluctuations in temperature and humidity outside and in your home cause condensation. This is perfectly normal. Foggy condensation in your window indicates an issue. When the seal is broken, moisture gets trapped in between the panes, causing fogginess. The usual solution is to replace the window.
  • Damaged Window Frame: Damage to the window frame such as mold, mildew, peeling paint, and sun damage may be indicative of a broken seal.
  • Drafts: A properly working window will not allow any draft to get through. A broken seal can cause drafts that allow the outside weather into your home. Hold your dampened hand along the window. If you feel a draft, there is an issue.
  • Difficulty Opening & Closing: It should not be difficult to open or close a properly functioning window. They should be snug and secure when they are closed and locked. When you unlock them, you should be able to open them easily.
